FAQ

Q: What is this site?

A: oregonartists.org is a free site where Oregon Artists of all types can create a free blog/gallery, get an official-sounding mail address, and network with other artists.

Q: It’s free? Then how is it being paid for?

A: The domain name and hosting are paid for by the site owner. The costs are minimal. The software (WordPress) is free and supported by a large online community. There are no paid sponsors and no paid advertising.

Q: How do I get my own blog/gallery site?

A: First, register and fill out as much of the profile information as you’re comfortable with. Then email the site admin and state in the body of the email that you would like your own site (oregonartists.org/yourusername)

Q: How do I get an oregonartists.org email address?

A: First, register and fill out as much of the profile information as you’re comfortable with. Then email the site admin and state in the body of the email that you would like your own oregonartists.org email address (yourusername@oregonartists.org).

Q: Can I set up my site however I want it?

A: Yes, within limits. Your site will be created in WordPress, using the default theme “Twenty Ten.” You are free to change or customize the theme, add features and display and offer your art for sale.

Q: What can’t I do?

A: This is not a commercial site; you can’t actually set up a payment system for people to buy your art online. Also, in keeping with the “no paid advertising” philosophy, you may not generate revenue by displaying advertising. This includes paid blog posts.

Q: So I can’t do product reviews?

A: Product reviews are fine, as long as you’re not getting paid for them. Other artists are always looking for new tools and supplies, so honest, helpful reviews are always welcome. There is one specific exception to this rule: If a manufacturer gives you, free of charge, a product to review, and you write an honest review, this is not considered a paid review. Please limit your reviews to art supplies and equipment.

Q: I don’t know anything about WordPress. How can I get help setting up my site?

A: There is a lot of information available online, also you can post in the forums for help or as a last resort email the site admin and explain what you need. If enough people sign up, we’ll do a group training session.

Q: I own/work for an art supply store/artist’s agency/gallery. This looks like a good place to advertise. How do I place an ad?

A: oregonartists.org does not accept paid advertising. However, artists are always looking for new resources, so we do accept unpaid advertising for services of interest to Oregon artists. What this means is that you may submit a text or graphic ad to the site adminthat will, if approved, be placed on the “Resources” page, which is visible only to registered users. Users won’t be forced to view your ad, but they can if they choose to do so. Including a discount or coupon within your ad is encouraged. You may submit ads as often as once a month; when a new ad is received, it replaces your old ad. Graphic ads must be less than or equal to 400 pixels wide x 200 pixels high.
